About Windsurf

Windsurf is an AI-native code editor originally launched as Codeium and rebuilt into a full VS Code-fork IDE. Its signature feature, Cascade, is an agent with deep repository context that executes multi-file changes with a visible plan, checkpoints, and rollback. Cognition AI, the company behind autonomous engineer Devin, acquired Windsurf in December 2025 for roughly $250M, and is progressively integrating Devin-level capability so long-running tasks can be handed off to a cloud agent while a developer works elsewhere. Windsurf runs its own SWE-series models alongside GPT, Claude, and Gemini options, with SWE-1.6 released April 2026 showing strong SWE-Bench Pro results and fast parallel tool usage.

Key features

Cascade agent
Deep-context agent that shows its plan, diffs, and checkpoints before applying changes
Devin handoff
Delegate long-running tasks to a cloud agent that works autonomously
SWE-series models
Proprietary fast models tuned specifically for coding tasks
MCP integrations
21+ tool connections for databases, APIs, and external services

Pros and cons

✓ Pros
Cascade is one of the most visually polished agentic experiences, showing plan and diffs clearly before applying
Generous free tier with unlimited Tab completions makes it easy to evaluate before paying
Fast proprietary SWE models, notably quicker than some competing models on multi-file edits
Devin integration offers a path to fully autonomous longer-running tasks
✗ Cons
Ownership transition under Cognition introduces some uncertainty for enterprise long-term contracts
Tends to integrate new third-party models slightly after competitors like Cursor
Cascade can lose track of context in very long sessions, requiring a fresh conversation
Pricing changed from a credit pool to daily/weekly quotas in March 2026, which took some users by surprise
